D-2 is a mixtape documenting Agust D’s 28 year old self. After a 4-year long wait, D-2 was spontaneously dropped in May 2020 and was promoted extensively more than his first. As a big fan and also as an Asian creative in their 20’s, I really resonated with the themes in this mixtape and wanted to fully explore it.
Features: Vinyl Sleeve Artwork, Lyric Website, Hangul + English Type
Although already a member of the world-dominating group, BTS, “Agust D” is a persona for his solo music where he has complete freedom over the type of music he creates. He explores some really deep and personal topics and in contrast, the album artwork doesn't feel as reflective of these emotions and themes. As much as we try not to, we do judge a book by its cover, so I wanted to create a cover that would compel you to listen to his story, regardless of the language barrier.
Since he considers this mixtape a documentation of himself, a mixture of worn-out paper textures, illustrative elements, and cool colors come together to visualize his contemplative journey over the past four years.
He speaks of feelings that are universal and relatable, regardless of language, age, or social status. This visual system accommodates Hangul and English type together to continue showcasing the artist's native language, while also making his messages more accessible to non-Korean audiences.
The colors and imagery of the back and front covers juxtapose each other to compare the differences between the artist's past and present self. While his previous successes make up a part of his identity now, they don't fully makeup who he is. Resting in a layer separate from the original cover, it shows how success doesn't necessarily make him whole, because when he takes those moments away, he feels empty.
* PULL THE ARROWS LEFT + RIGHT TO REVEAL THE EMPTINESS *
Agust D values making his music and messages accessible and relatable to everyone. Rather than making a print lyric book, I created a lyric site that could be accessed at any time. By hovering over the lyrics, viewers can access related photos and commentary and by clicking on the song titles, you’ll be directed to SoundCloud to listen for free!
